Travelling is an amazing experience!
Who doesn’t want to travel new places!!
But you need to keep in mind that although this is new for you; is it not new for everyone!
People have slept where you have, on the sheets you are sleeping on, wiped themselves with the towels you are using…Going to hotels, (hopefully) everything smells and feels fresh. When you walk into a hotel room, the last thing you want to be reminded of, is that someone was here before you…
But the reality is that someone WAS there before you.
So here are some handy hints to make sure those hotel hinders stay where they belong!
Now, bed bugs are NOT in every hotel. So do not start panicking and going all Sheldon Cooper on us… But there are things you can do to avoid bringing them home if they are in hotels. Because once they get into your home, they are ridiculously hard to eradicate!
Bed bugs are that literally survive on blood…. Grosssssssss
They are a parasite that are not limited to, but are usually nocturnal. They nest in crevices of mattresses or in a dark small areas near the bed. They are extremely hard to locate and you don’t usually know you have them until you suffer from an allergic reaction or skin irritation from their bites. (They weren’t kidding when they say don’t let the bed bugs bite!) But do not panic, they are not a threat to your health! Another fact is they are not because of filth. You can have the cleanest hotel and have bed bugs and the dirtiest hotels with none. It is all about where they have been transmitted.
– Do not put your suitcase on the bed.
If there are bugs living in the mattress you do not want them attaching themselves to the fabric of your suitcase (cause you will never know) and going home and putting your suitcase on your bed. Transfer complete.
– Do not leave clothing on the bed
Putting clothing from the trip in your bag once on the bed, and taking them home with you….
– Wash clothes as soon as you get home
Do not leave your clothes in your room overnight. Just chuck them straight into the laundry. Whether it is just onto tiled carpet or straight in the washing machine.
– Scrub your suitcase
If you are worried you got the bugs, scrub your suitcase with the hottest water you can handle to kill them before putting in back in your closet.
– Inspect your room
Pull back the sheets and check the mattress. You will not see actual bed bugs because they are fantastic hiders and only come out in the dark. What you will be looking for is the nests of fecal matter. These are tiny, grain of sand like black dots.
