Movie Review: Behind the Candelabra

12 Sep

Who is this movie about, you ask? Really, you don’t know? I’ll tell you who! It’s about the world-renowned virtuoso pianist, flamboyant entertainer of the stage and television, and an absolute star with such a loyal fan base; the legend with a career spanning over 40 years, this movie is about the one and only… Liberace! This is about the man who lived a lavish life both on stage and off… and his secretive five-year love affair with a handsome young stranger who walked into his dressing room one day.

Many things get kept under wraps in the celebrity world (oh my god, if only we knew!), but usually you’ll find most things come out eventually and the truth is revealed. We all want to know the personal lives of our favourites in the limelight! This story in particular is about Liberace (played by Michael Douglas) and his secret relationship with a much younger man, Scott Thornson  (played by Matt Damon) over five years.

This story is mainly based on Liberace’s relationship with Thorson, which is interesting to see as Liberace famously sued those who suggested he was ‘homosexual’ for libel… and WON! An article written in the Daily Mirror by columnist William Connor, under the alias (fake name) of ‘Cassandra’, described Liberace as,
“…a deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavoured, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love”.

After reading this, Liberace sent a telegram back saying,
“What you said hurt me very much. I cried all the way to the bank.”

Talk about drama and sass!

This movie, if not already in your country, will be coming out soon to DVD.
*Hint hint* This film is great if you want to see Matt Damon in a very revealing diamond thong! Whoa!!
